Lash extensions have five genuine downsides: the ongoing time and cost commitment, potential damage to natural lashes if applied by an inexperienced artist, some daily lifestyle adjustments (no oil-based skincare near the eyes, no face-down sleeping), a small allergic reaction risk for some people, and the reality that a bad set is more visible than no lashes at all.

Everything else you've probably read ("they always damage your natural lashes," "you can't wash your face," "they always look fake") is either a myth or the result of choosing the wrong artist. This guide covers both, plus how to avoid every one of the real downsides.

Five that are honest trade-offs, not deal-breakers.

1. Ongoing time and cost commitment

Extensions need infill appointments every 2 to 4 weeks. Each infill runs 60 to 90 minutes and costs 50 to 70% of a fresh full set. Annualized, that's a real budget line — think ฿15,000 to ฿30,000 per year at Chiang Mai pricing.

If you go 5+ weeks without an infill, the set stops looking good and often needs a full removal + new set, which costs more.

2. Potential damage to natural lashes (only from bad application)

Here's the honest version of the "extensions ruin your lashes" fear. Properly applied extensions do not damage natural lashes. Damage comes from three things:

• Oversized fans on weak natural lashes. A Mega Volume fan on a fine natural lash puts too much weight at the root, and the natural lash sheds early. Enough of this over months and your lash line thins visibly.
• Poor isolation — the artist glues two natural lashes together while applying the extension. When one sheds, it pulls the other with it and can pull it out at the root.
• Rough at-home removal. Peeling extensions off (or picking at loose ones) yanks natural lashes with them.

All three are prevented by choosing a careful, certified artist and letting extensions shed naturally.

3. Daily lifestyle adjustments

Nothing crushing, but you'll need to change a few habits:

• No oil-based cleansers, makeup wipes, or cleansing balms near your eyes.
• No waterproof mascara (needs oil-based remover to take off).
• No eyelash curlers.
• Sleeping face-down halves retention. Back sleeping is best; side sleeping is fine with a silk pillowcase.
• No steam room / sauna / hot yoga in the first 48 hours.

4. Allergic reaction risk

Roughly 2% of clients have some level of reaction to the cyanoacrylate adhesive used in extensions. Symptoms range from mild watering to swollen lids. Patch testing 48 hours before your first appointment catches most sensitivities.

5. A bad set is more visible than no lashes

Extensions add drama to your face. A well-mapped set adds it in a way that flatters. A poorly-mapped or too-heavy set adds it in a way that doesn't, and it's more noticeable than just having your natural lashes.

The fix is choosing an artist who consults before applying, maps the design on your closed eye first, and adjusts if the shape isn't working. Bad sets happen when a salon runs a menu-pick model with no consultation.

Three common ones worth debunking.

"Extensions always damage your natural lashes." False. Damage is a function of application, not extensions in general. See downside #2 above.

"You can't shower or wash your face with extensions." Almost false. The full rule is: no water on the lashes for the first 24 hours while the adhesive cures. After that, normal showering and gentle water-based washing is fine indefinitely.

Six things, in order of importance.

Choose a certified artist, not a cheap salon. The single biggest determinant of your experience. Ask how long they've been doing lashes exclusively (not "beauty services in general").

Ask about handmade fans vs premade. Handmade fans are lighter and sized to your natural lash. Premade fans are heavier, faster to apply, and shed sooner while stressing the natural lash more. Cheap shops almost always use premade.

Ask about the glue. Premium medical-grade adhesive holds up to Chiang Mai humidity. Cheap glue doesn't. If a salon can't tell you what they use, it's usually the cheap one.

Do a patch test if you're sensitive. Any history of skin reactions, contact dermatitis, or eye product allergies? Ask for a patch test 48 hours before your first appointment.

Commit to the refill schedule. Book your first refill before you leave your initial appointment. Set a reminder. Skipping refills is the single fastest way to have a bad extension experience.

Follow the aftercare rules. They're not decorative. Water in the first 24 hours halves retention. Oil-based products at the lash line dissolves the bond. Rubbing your eyes breaks it mechanically.
