Aftercare Guide
How to Care for Lash Extensions: The Day-by-Day Aftercare Guide (Chiang Mai 2026)
Master the three rules that decide whether your set lasts 4 days or 4 weeks.

If you're reading this at 11pm because you just realized you can't wash your face the way you usually do, you're in the right place.
The short version: keep your lashes dry for 24 hours, stay away from oil-based anything near your eyes, and brush them daily with a clean spoolie. Do that, and your set lasts a full 3 to 4 weeks. Skip it, and you're back booking a refill in week 2 wondering what happened.
This is the practical day-by-day handbook. Real rules, why they matter, and which ones you can relax on once you know what you're doing.
Published by My Lash House, a private one-on-one lash studio in San Klang, Chiang Mai. This guide reflects the aftercare we talk through with every client at the end of their appointment.
What's the quickest aftercare summary?
Three things move the needle on retention, and only three.
One, keep the lashes dry for 24 hours so the cyanoacrylate adhesive can fully cure.
Two, skip oil-based skincare and makeup near your eye area indefinitely. Oil dissolves the adhesive bond, every time.
Three, clean daily with a foam lash shampoo and brush through with your spoolie.
Everything else (sleep position, mascara, eyelash curlers, refill cadence) matters at the margins. Nail the big three and a properly applied set lasts the full 3 to 4 weeks. Skip them and the set halves in lifespan no matter how good your artist is.
What do I do in the first 24 hours after my appointment?
This is the curing window, and it's the one rule you absolutely cannot bend.
The cyanoacrylate adhesive used in lash extensions takes a full day to reach maximum bond strength. Water exposure during this window weakens those bonds permanently. There's no fixing it after the fact.
What to avoid for the first 24 hours
- Showers with water directly on your face
- Swimming, hot springs, the ocean
- Steam (hot yoga, sauna, steam room, even opening the dishwasher)
- Sweat from heavy exercise
- Makeup of any kind near the eye
- Crying (whenever possible, you know how it goes)
- Sleeping face-down
What's totally fine
- Drinking water normally
- Washing your hands
- Eating normally (just don't lean over a steaming bowl of soup)
- Light walking and movement
- Working at your screen
If you absolutely have to exercise in the first 24 hours, keep your heart rate low enough that sweat doesn't form. A short walk is fine. A hot yoga class is a no.

What about the first week?
After the 24-hour cure, your daily-life rules kick in. Most retention slip-ups in the first week come down to three usual suspects: oil-based skincare, makeup remover wipes, and waterproof mascara residue.
Which skincare products should I retire from my eye-area rotation?
- Oil cleansers
- Micellar water (most formulas contain solvents that dissolve lash adhesive)
- Cleansing balms
- Eye creams with retinol or rich oil bases
- Makeup remover wipes (almost all use oil-based formulas to dissolve waterproof products)
Which skincare products are safe near my eyes?
- Water-based foaming cleansers
- Gel cleansers labeled "oil-free"
- Lightweight, water-based moisturizers (applied below your brow bone, not at your lash line)
Can I still wear makeup with lash extensions?
Mascara isn't necessary anymore. Your extensions already do the mascara thing for you (fuller, darker, more defined), so skip it.
If you genuinely need mascara for a specific event, use only water-based, lash-extension-safe formulas. Apply to the tips of your extensions, never the roots.
Eyeshadow is fine. Powder formulas are safest. Cream shadows with oil bases shorten retention.
Eyeliner against your lash line is fine. Oil-based liner pencils dissolve adhesive, so skip those.
How do I clean lash extensions daily?
Two small habits separate a set that ages beautifully from one that looks ragged by week two.
How often should I clean them?
Foam-type lash shampoo is the standard. Apply with the soft brush we send you home with, massage gently along your lash line (not just the tips), rinse with cool water, pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
Skip cotton pads. They catch on extensions and pull them out.
How do I use the spoolie?
That spoolie we sent you home with? That's its job.
Gentle upward strokes from base to tip. Separate any extensions that crossed during sleep. Twenty seconds, max. That's the whole routine.
Should I pat or rub when drying?
After cleansing, after the shower, after a rainy walk to the car. Always pat with a lint-free cloth.
Rubbing is the single most damaging daily habit. It breaks the adhesive bond and pulls your natural lashes out at the root. Be gentle.
What should I never do with lash extensions?
A short list of things that, in 7+ years on the chair, consistently halve a set's lifespan.
- Oil-based cleansers, removers, and makeup wipes (the single biggest retention killer)
- Waterproof mascara (requires oil-based remover, which dissolves adhesive)
- Eyelash curlers (bend the extensions out of shape and crack the bond)
- Rubbing your eyes, especially when you're sleepy or itchy
- Picking or pulling at loose extensions (let them shed naturally)
- Sauna, steam room, hot yoga in the first 48 hours (moisture plus heat weakens fresh bonds)
- Sleeping face-down on your lashes for hours
The sauna rule relaxes after the first 48 hours. After that, occasional steam exposure is fine. Just rinse and pat dry afterward.

Does Chiang Mai's weather affect lash extensions?
Yes, more than people expect. A few local factors worth planning around.
Rainy season (May to October). The constant humidity keeps your skin oilier than usual, which weakens the adhesive bond faster. Daily cleaning becomes non-negotiable in these months — it's the only thing that keeps natural oils from sitting on the lash line all day.
Hot-season sweat (March to May). Heavy sweat during the hottest months has the same effect as water in the cure window if it's pouring down your face. Cool your face before stepping inside (cold water on the wrists works) instead of dabbing at sweaty lashes with whatever's nearby.
Hotel and condo AC. Strong AC dries the eye area and makes the natural lashes more brittle, which causes faster shedding. A water-based eye cream applied below the brow bone (not at the lash line) helps without endangering the extensions.
Motorbike dust and rain. If you ride, a clear pair of glasses or a helmet visor protects the set from grit and direct rain spray. Both shorten retention more than weather alone.
What if I'm flying within 48 hours of my appointment?
Tourists and short-stay visitors ask this constantly. The honest version:
Within 24 hours, don't fly if you can avoid it. Cabin pressure is fine, but the dry recycled cabin air pulls moisture out of everything including the curing adhesive. If you have to fly, drink water aggressively, skip eye makeup, and bring saline mist (not eye drops with preservatives, which can drip onto the lashes).
Between 24 and 48 hours, flying is fine with one rule: avoid touching your face the entire flight. The cabin is dirtier than you think and the temptation to rub when you're sleepy is the real risk.
After 48 hours, fly normally. The set is fully cured.
If you're visiting Chiang Mai and want a set before you fly home, book the appointment for the morning of day 2 of your trip at minimum. That gives a 48-hour buffer before any return flight. For shorter trips, lash lift might be the better call — it has no cure window.
How should I sleep without losing lashes?
Sleep position matters more than most clients expect.
A pillow pressing against your lashes for 6 to 8 hours a night slowly breaks down the bonds. The side you favor takes the hit first.
Back sleepers retain best. By a wide margin.
Side sleepers lose lashes on the side they sleep on faster than the opposite side. By week 3, the asymmetry is visible.
Stomach sleepers lose lashes the fastest of all. If switching positions isn't realistic, a silk pillowcase reduces friction enough to help.
When should I come in for a refill?
Most clients refill every 2 to 3 weeks.
Lighter styles like Classic 1:1 and Light Volume hold a bit longer and can stretch to 3 to 4 weeks. (Curious which natural-family style suits you? The natural lash extensions guide walks through all four.) Heavier styles like Russian Volume and Mega Volume need 2 to 3 weeks to look full.
The sweet spot for a refill is when your set has retained roughly 40 to 60% of the original extensions. Enough remains for Ying to map cleanly into the existing shape. Not so few that the appointment becomes a near-rebuild.
How do I know I waited too long?
- More than 50% of the set has shed
- Visible gaps along your lash line
- Remaining extensions are growing out at angles that don't sit cleanly
- The set no longer looks like the original design
If it's been 4+ weeks, a refill often costs about the same as a fresh full set and looks worse afterward. Start fresh instead.
If you're three weeks in and worried about how much you've shed, the longevity and retouch guide breaks down what's normal at each week.
What does the 3-day retouch guarantee cover?
Every set at My Lash House comes with a 3-day retouch guarantee.
The guarantee covers abnormal shedding within the first three days caused by a glue or application issue on our side. Not normal natural-lash shedding. Not aftercare mistakes.
What counts as an application issue (covered)?
- Losing more than 5 extensions per eye in the first three days
- Shedding clustered in one zone (often the outer corner)
- Extensions coming off without the natural lash attached (suggests glue bond failure)
- One eye shedding dramatically more than the other
What counts as aftercare shedding (not covered)?
- Water exposure in the first 24 hours
- Use of oil-based products near the eyes
- Rubbing your eyes
- Sleeping face-down
- Using makeup remover wipes or micellar water
To claim the guarantee, message us on Instagram with clear photos of the affected area within 3 days of your appointment. We'll book you in for a free retouch.
How was this guide written?
This guide is compiled from the aftercare consultation we give every client at the end of their appointment, plus seven years of pattern recognition on which habits actually move retention.
Retention timeframes reflect typical results across multiple clients and lash types. Individual results vary based on skin type, sleep position, and aftercare adherence. The 3-day retouch policy reflects the published policy at My Lash House as of June 2026. Where individual cases vary, we say so directly.
Readers comparing studios should ask any lash artist about their retouch policy, isolation technique, and aftercare guidance. Three signals of how seriously a studio takes long-term retention versus just selling sets.
